This polar finder shows the Pole star and two other stars (Delta UMi and 51 Cep) in the reticule for the northern hemisphere.
Turn the right ascension axis of the mount so that your view of these two stars align with the markings on the polar finder’s reticule. The reticule shows you the position in which the Pole star should be. By moving the bolts for azimuth and altitude, you can move the mount so that the Pole star moves into this position. A complicated alignment using the date and time is unnecessary.
Similarly, in the southern hemisphere line up the polygon (Sigma, Chi, Tau, and Upsilon Octantis) in the Octans constellation in the recticule in order to align in the same way.
